Mitigation and moving towards low carbon waterborne transport infrastructure

All sectors must play their part in climate change mitigation. The waterborne transport infrastructure sector is no exception.

Port and waterway infrastructure and operations typically account for only a very small proportion of the total greenhouse gas emissions associated with the shipment of a particular consignment. The most significant proportion by far is associated with the sea voyage, and a varying amount with connecting transport.

It is nonetheless important that the owners, operators and users of waterborne transport infrastructure take steps to minimise the emissions associated with their activities if they are to contribute to the ‘less-than-2-degrees’ pathway.

The associations represented on the the Navigating a Changing Climate Partnership recognise the importance – and the urgency – of implementing effective mitigation measures and of moving towards low carbon infrastructure.

Coalition members further acknowledge the need for innovation alongside conventional emissions-reduction measures: for example initiatives aimed at improving integration to increase energy efficiency or at creating carbon sinks in coastal areas by Working with Nature.

As with other sectors, such innovation has the potential to bring associated social, employment and economic opportunities.

What we do

Worldwide, Jan De Nul Group executes dredging and land reclamation projects, specialized services for the offshore industry of oil, gas and renewables, impressive civil engineering projects and environmental remediation activities, from start to finish. Throughout the years, Jan De Nul Group has been investing in its own people, resources and technical know-how. Dredging and maritime works. Jan De Nul Group executes dredging and land reclamation projects from start to finish: design, development and maintenance of ports, deepening of channels, land reclamation and shore protection works, dredging in the most diverse conditions. Often, these dredging activities are part of a comprehensive port infrastructure project.

Offshore Services. Jan De Nul Group offers specific offshore services to the oil, gas and renewable energy market: seabed intervention works, rock installation and ballasting, installation of offshore wind farms and installation of submarine cables and umbilicals. All these services are designed and executed according to the specific needs and wishes of the respective clients.

Civil engineering works. Jan De Nul Group focuses on complex projects, for which the Group offers its clients an overall package to size. From design up to execution, all key activities are executed within Jan De Nul Group: locks, quay walls, bridges, tunnels, roads, buildings, water treatment plants, sewer systems or pipelines.
