A webinar hosted by Euro-Mediterranean Centre on Climate Change - "Nature-Based Solutions for Coastal Defense: Experimental and Numerical Modeling" - will be held on 13th July at 1700 (CEST)
During the last decades, millions of dollars have been spent on reducing consequences of extreme events and, to a lesser extent, on climate change adaptation in coastal areas. However, in the last few years, coastal managers have become interested in low environmental impact alternatives, or nature-based solutions (NBS), to protect the coast. In order to better understand how coastal ecosystems can protect the coast, a study was done to analyse the role of the three main vegetated ecosystems that extend along coastal areas: seagrasses, saltmarshes and mangrove forests. This webinar presents the results of different experimental and numerical studies, including new formulations and tools to predict how these ecosystems damp flow energy and can be applied in coastal defense policies as NBS.

Building with Nature requires integration of system knowledge and specific technology. Large-scale system analysis and understanding of the driving processes, physical & ecological, and natural dynamics are key to creating smart Nature-based solutions. Smart solutions are dynamic, meaning they change and develop over time. To make these solutions dynamic, a specific monitoring and maintenance approach is required.
This webinar will explore dynamic Nature-based solutions and show the importance of combing system knowledge with an adaptive monitoring plan. This event will feature 2 panel discussions focusing on Technology and system knowledge for the first hour, and Adaptive management and maintenance and monitoring for the second hour.
